Free to Air (FTA) Satellite Dish Setup

Free to Air (FTA) Satellite Dish Setup: I was able to receive around 230 international channels just from one satellite using this simple fixed dish setup. There are a few fta satellites out there which broadcast a variety of channels all around the world. The first step would be to do so…

Low Cost Hydrogen Line Telescope using the RTL-SDR

Amateur radio astronomer Y1PWE has uploaded a pdf document describing how he created a low cost hydrogen line telescope using an RTL-SDR dongle (links under heading 2. H-Line Receiver) . Hydrogen atoms randomly emit photons at a wavelength of 21cm (1420.4058 MHz). Normally a single hydrogen atom will rarely emit a photon, but since space and the galaxy is filled with many hydrogen atoms the average effect is an observable RF power spike at 1420.4058 MHz. By pointing a radio telescope at the…

Make a Radio Telescope With Raspberry Pi

Make a Radio Telescope With Raspberry Pi: It is really easy to get an optical telescope. You can just buy one from a manufacturer of such telescopes. However, the same cannot really be said of radio telescopes. Usually, you have to make them yourself. In this Instructable, I will show how t…

PICTOR: An Open Source Low Cost Radio Telescope based on RTL-SDR

PICTOR is an open source and open hardware radio telescope that aims to promote radio astronomy on a budget. It consists of a 1.5 meter parabolic dish antenna, 1420 MHz feedhorn, a two stage low noise amplifier (LNA), high pass filter, and from what we gather, an RTL-SDR. Future designs may also use higher bandwidth SDRs. Currently there doesn't seem to be much information about the build and exact components used in their design, but we're hoping that those details will come in time. The…
