Poveglia- a small off-limits to visitors island off of the coast of Italy. It has been used as: a dumping ground for bodies during the plague, a military/government fortification, and weirdly enough, retirement homes. Local legend says that it is now entirely empty save for the ghost of a doctor who once ran a Shutter Island-style mental hospital there.
Located in a lagoon in Venice, Italy, this island got its scary start when the Romans decided the best thing for society was to round up all the plague victims of the era, and stick them somewhere. That somewhere happened to be Poveglia Island. Years later when the Bubonic plague tore through Europe, the island was reinstated. When the plague got worse, they lowered Poveglia's requirements, and ultimately began to throw thousands of infected into large pits, where they would be burned alive. ...
Mark Twain House Samuel Clemens, his wife Livy & their 3 girls lived in this home. Clemens completed The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn & many of his other successful works while here. Sadly, this was also where his daughter Susy died from meningitis. The rest of the family, living abroad at the time, never returned to the house after her tragic death. Charles Fort in Kinsale County Cork - was built in the 1670s and is often visited by the "White Lady of Kinsale". In the 1870s, Wilful Warrender, was married to Sir Trevor Ashurst. One day Ashurst switched places with a sentry, who he sent to get flowers. When Wilful's father saw the sentry sleeping he shot him, only to discover that he shot his son-in-law. Wilful jumped to her death soon after, and her ghost has wandered the grounds ever since, and has been seen walking through locked doors.
