The patriarch of the Barrymore acting family, Herbert Arthur Chamberlayne Blyth (1849-1905) scandalized his family by choosing a career in acting rather than the law. Taking the stage name "Maurice Barrymore," to spare his family the shame of having an actor in the family, he fled England in 1874 for New York, then soon met and married Georgiana Drew (1854-1893), the daughter of Louisa Drew. In the years that followed, the Barrymores became one of the nation's most successful theatrical couples.
As her grandmother left her post at Arch Street and her father remarried, she was told that she would have to go to work to earn her own livelihood. The situation put an end to her childhood dream of becoming a concert pianist. Instead, she practically turned to the family business. “Acting was, after all, the only thing I could do best,” she later remarked. Barrymore made her stage debut in 1894, appearing in a touring production of The Rivals starring her grandmother.
Grave Marker- John Barrymore, US actor 2/2. He was buried in East Los Angeles, at Calvary Cemetery, on June 2. Surviving family members in attendance were his brother Lionel and his daughter Diana. Ex-wife Elaine also attended. Among his active pallbearers were Gene Fowler, John Decker, W.C. Fields, Herbert Marshall, Eddie Mannix, Louis B. Mayer, and David O. Selznick. Years later, Barrymore's son John had the body reinterred at Philadelphia's Mount Vernon Cemetery.
BARRYSCOURT Barryscourt was the chief seat of the Barrymore family from about 1170 although the present buildings date from the 16th century.
