On most of the plants you are likely to prune, the buds will be arranged along the stem at regular intervals in one of two ways: either alternately (one on one side of the stem, one farther up on the other side, and so on) or in opposite pairs (one on each side of the stem, directly opposite one another). The buds are usually closer together at the base of the stem and slightly wider apart as you progress upward.

To some extent you can determine the amount of basic pruning you will need to do by choosing good-quality plants that have no obvious signs of pests and diseases, damage, or injury and that are growing well (although that is not easy to tell during the dormant season).

Despite the many types of trees available from plant nurseries, the most popular form for many gardens is still a standard tree, which has a clear, bare stem with no branches up to a height of about 6ft (2m) above soil level.

As plants develop a cycle of flowering and fruiting regularly, they often slip into overproduction. You have only to look at a rose or crabapple that has been left unpruned for a number of years to see that the more flowers and fruit a plant produces, the smaller they become. Often, too, the flowers and fruits on the inner sections of the branches are not only small but of poor quality. Pruning away some sections of stems and branches allows you to remove some of the poorer stems altogether.

Shrubs
A shrub is a long-term garden plant. Its success in your garden depends on you. It is not only about where you plant it but also how you plant to ensure good root development and establishment, encouraging it to grow, develop, and thrive. You need to ensure that the growing conditions in your garden are as good as, or better than, those it enjoyed in the nursery.

To some the analysis of growing conditions will seem restrictive and limiting, choosing for season of interest and desirable attributes more appealing. Personal preference will always play a very important part in plant selection, and so it should. Gardens are personal spaces, and there is no point choosing a shrub that you really do not like just because it will succeed in a specific situation. This is often an obstacle to those of us who specify and recommend plants for gardens.

Outdoors, children can develop a relationship with other creatures, experiencing an empathetic connection they will most likely carry with them throughout life. Children’s natural curiosity leads them on. My sons began collecting different types of rocks, and it eventually became a ritual on every family vacation to visit geological features and rock shops.

Have you embraced mulching? Mulch is a plant- or manure-based material placed on the surface of the soil. A good, nutritious mulch is basically coarse compost. It can be made from composted green waste, plant waste, and manures. (Green waste is a good-quality compost produced by many municipalities from plant debris collected by homeowners and landscapers.)

Planting Flowers
Don’t buy rootbound plants. It’s an unfortunate fact that nurseries sometimes sell plants that aren’t in peak condition. Plants that have been in the pot too long will have tightly packed roots, and most do not recover well when planted, especially annuals, trees, and shrubs. In particular, woody plants are apt to develop “circling” roots, which can strangle the plant long after it’s in the ground. Don’t buy these plants. Instead, select one where the roots just fill the container.

Drought
Don’t stress your plants. Stressed plants emit compounds that are attractive to pest insects. So don’t let that happen! Common sources of stress are drought, poor soil fertility and structure, climatic incompatibility, or excessive use of chemical fertilizers. Insecticides aren’t the answer—they kill both pest insects and beneficial insects, and the pests will rebound much more quickly. Instead, mitigate stress by paying attention to soil quality, proper siting, and adequate irrigation.

Consider spot removal in autumn rather than total eradication. Editing gradually leads to the same svelte results, but you gain maximum impact along the way. The unique feature of this season is that it remakes itself daily. Don’t banish your brown prematurely. Celebrate it. Brown is not the tragedy; brown is the happy ending. #October #fall

There are a few practical considerations when placing mirrors in the garden. Shady areas, where bright sunlight won’t be reflected back, are ideal. Not only will placement in these darker locations keep annoying or even hazardous flashes of light from reflecting back into the garden, but a shadier spot will also minimize the possibility that the mirror is in the flight path of birds.

Helleborus ×hybridus Winter Jewels Fire and Ice, a recent result in our breeding program. We dreamed of breeding ever better and brighter hellebore flowers with good foliage to match. We followed the dreams of our imagination. We bred for a brilliant yellow flower that is slow to turn green, slate flowers that one could call blue with only a bit of a stretch, and shapely flowers with rounded, even sepals and colorful backs that would entice even the casual viewer.

Wherever and however seed sowing occurs, it is always a sublimely tactile operation. Indoors or outside (as soon as it is feasible to work the soil, the festivities are moved out to planting rows of seeds directly in the earth), you need to do it delicately. Although I’m an outspoken advocate for gardening with gloves, this is one instance where gloves get in the way.

After the peas are tucked in, the momentum gains pace. Spring just sort of sprouts up. From early March onward, everyone is immersed in the über-focused business of sowing. In my garden, seed sowing commences indoors with the ceremonial planting of the leeks. The official starting gate is the potting bench, which is scattered with packets of just about everything from cabbages to columbines.
