Constantine and Sol Invictus ("The Invincible Sun"), circa 313 CE. Sol Invictus was a Roman divinity, so it's interesting to see Constantine, of all people, to be portrayed alongside a Roman god. This would have been minted right around his conversion, but long before Theodosius the Great declared Christianity to be the state religion of the Empire. This coin shows a period in transition, from Roman polytheism to Christian monotheism. Anglo Saxon, Romans, Byzantine, Ancient Roman Coins, Ancient Coins
