First Grade Architecture

Architecture has been the theme for many of my lessons this quarter. My first graders reviewed what an architect is. We looked at Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Water," and as with most art works that we look at and discuss, the kids were blown away with this design. During that lesson, the kids looked at the many parts that make up the exterior of a house and then designed their own. We also discussed that architect considers the land where a building will be built and so the kids drew their…

This is wonderful visual activity for students to see the similarities and differences between types of communities. By incorporating pictures that relate to the different communities, visual learners will pick up on those picture cues as well. Great way to visually explain levels of government leadership! honestly I wish my teachers had done this when I was learning about government. I probably would have a better understanding of it all. 3rd Grade Social Studies, Social Studies Classroom, Social Studies Activities, Teaching Social Studies, Teaching History, Teaching Science, Social Science, Teaching Ideas, History Education

Crayon Bits - a first grade blog

As part of our calendar time for December, we made Christmas Countdown Chains (an oldie but a goodie!) The kids took theirs home to hang on their closet doors, but we have one at school hanging by our calendar and will take one loop off each day until break.

Our first unit in Social Studies focused on Communities. We created triaramas showing characteristics of a rural, suburban, and urban community. Then in the last section they made a tree map about the three different communities. I think this is adorable! Buzzing About Second Grade

We had so much fun learning about the Polar Regions! My students read articles, researched in books, and looked up information via the internet. We practiced using nonfiction text features, main idea/details, and context clues. First we started off learning about the Arctic vs. Antarctic. We got a lot of information from a little brochure I typed up for them. I also had the students do a "close" read using a Reading A to Z book - "Polar Regions of Earth" (you can find it by clicking on…
