Here is an amazing collection of rare vintage photos capturing street scenes in New York City during the The Bowery, New York Ti.

During the silent era it was not un-common for a big palace to have an orchestra play along with the picture in addition to the stage show.  This is a shot looking down at the 100-piece orchestra pit risen up from it's depths below to stage level. The orchestra, like the organ consoles, could rise to various levels.
