Ancient Egyptian Amethyst Necklace - Purchased in 1895, this amethyst necklace likely dates to Egypt’s Middle Kingdom, circa 2000 BC. However, the inscription on the central stone is a South Arabian script, dating to around the 8th century BC.  The stone may be a scarab that was later re-carved, but how a South Arabian script came to be written on an Egyptian scarab is a mystery.

Other legends reflected beliefs that amethyst kept its wearer clear-headed and quick-witted in battle and in business affairs. This ancient necklace dates to An inscription on the center stone is a South Arabian script from the century BCE.

Finger-ring; gold; oval bezel, its sides decorated in openwork with engraved birds; set with a carbouchon sapphire held in four claws; the junction between bezel and hoop decorated with two animal heads; the hoop trapeziodal in section with beaded outer edge, the two sides engraved to receive a nielloed inscription: AVE MARIA GRA / TIA PLENA DMI. ('Hail Mary, full of the grace of the Lord'), a variation on the angelic salutation at the Annunciation.
