Andre Les Alpes, France Rare and exotic, these two coiled French ammonites are studded with spines and are unusually large, complete and well preserved for the species.

This immaculately preserved and expertly prepared ammonite with remarkable shell structure is incomparably rare. Unlike most ammonites, which coil along a single plane, it belongs to a bizarre group of prehistoric cephalopods known as "heteromorph" ammonites, which have uncoiled or irregularly coiled shells. Species: Ostlingoceras puzosianum Age: Albian Stage of the Lower Cretaceous - 108 million years old. Location: Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Southeastern France

This creature evolved as it adapted to the transition from open sea to freshwater conditions in the Ludlow area towards the end of the Silurian. It had not evolved at the time the rocks beneath Whitcliffe were laid down, but fossils of the animal have been found in the younger rocks just to the east, downstream of Ludford Bridge.
