Astronomical clocks are not clocks in the traditional sense as they are used to calculate the positions of the sun, moon, and stars at any time using its gears. People used this information to tell the time among other things. Astronomical clocks go back as far as 2nd century BC but they only got popular in the 11th century. This fits into my theme as it shows another way people told time.
