Before his death in 1702, William Charlton delivered a  butterfly that looked similar to the English brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni), with the exception of a smattering of blue speckles. Linnaeus studied the specimen, christened it Papilio ecclipsis, and included it in the 12th edition of his Systema Naturae. It was another three decades before John Christian Fabricius realized that the butterfly was a fake -- a doctored version of that common brimstone butterfly, artfully splashed with paint.
