B-24 Assembly Ships - as only the lead ships did navigation, the assembly ship's job was to be as visible as possible, so the other 24s could find it at take-off. They would then follow the lead ship to the target. The assembly ship was usually a plane deemed not combat-worthy and used only as a visual aid..
