Me 262. The Messerschmitt ME 262, the world's first jet fighter, streaked away from him at more than 540 MPH, one hundred miles per hour faster than the P-51.

The only reliable way to destroy them, as with the Luftwaffe's even faster Me 163 rocket fighters, was to get to them on the ground before-and-during-take-off, or simply to deprive the Germans of the fuel supplies they needed. But this worked. These magnificent warbirds ended up not changing a thing in the course of the war.

Messerschmitt Me 262 A-1a - EJG 2 flown by Luftwaffe ace Major Heinz Bär. During the remainder of World War II, Bär was credited with 130 other aerial victories, including 16 while flying one of the first jet fighters, the Me 262, an achievement which would normally have earned him the coveted Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds.
