Lord Ganesha , son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is worshiped in Hindu Religion as the god of beginnings, knowledge, wisdom, intellect and remover of obstacles. One always starts any prayer, ritual or occasion by worshiping the Beloved Elephant God. Lord Ganesh blessings are also sought before starting any new venture. Lord Ganesha is also referred to as Ganapati, Gajanana, Vinayaka, Vighneshawar and Pillaiyar.

His consort is Sarasvati, who recieves independent worship. He is generally shown riding a swan or a male goose.

Shiva consumed the poison in an act to protect the universe - Drinking of this gross poison was a small matter for Shiva. In the 'Linga Purana' Shiva said there is still much poison in this world and those who could drink that poison are the real heroes. (note similarity to what Jesus did)
