Pan Pipes -This small but rare object is a syrinx, or set of boxwood panpipes- 10th-century pit at Coppergate. Only example known from the Viking period. The syrinx comprises 4 complete, evenly spaced tubes, and one fragmentary tube, all bored to be of differing lengths. Blowing across their tops produces a 5-note scale, running from top A to top E: it is thought that there may have been more tubes originally, perhaps 7. There is a hole towards the base to suspend the instrument from a belt.
