La Belle Epoque

Dress (Tea Gown) Date: Culture: American Metropolitan Museum of Art Accession Number:

Afternoon or reception gown, Worth, ca. 1890s. Velvet & lace dress worn by Empress Maria Fyodorovna of Russia. There seem to be two pieces of the same lace that the empress could have worn on the bodice--one a kind of cravat and the other a kind of bertha. There were also alternate sleeves, one the dark red velvet of the overdress and the other the pink patterned satin of the underskirt. Hermitage Museum via Dutch Costume Society Pinterest
