The Italian Colloredo brothers were favorites at the court of Charles I of England. Lazarus was a handsome & popular man, but his attached brother was little more than an unconscious dangling entity. Lazarus would walk the streets with his voluminous cloak draped over his brother so as not to cause unwanted attention. At other times, Lazarus would invite spectators to pinch his brother to hear him cry out with involuntary nonverbal protestations. This cruel behavior was a popular pastime.

Grace McDaniels (1888 - August 1958), AKA the "Mule Faced Woman," was born in Numa, Iowa. She was called the Mule faced Woman because, obviously, her face resembled that of a mule's. The reasoning behind this ugly exterior is that she had had lip cancer which caused her lip to swell. After about thirty years, her lip was so swollen that she was able to join a freak show. She was married and had a child. She later retired and moved to Tampa, Florida. She then died of lip cancer in 1958.

The anonymous woman patient underwent a hysterectomy most likely sometime in the early 20th century, in order to remove the sizable uterine fibroid, which can be seen on the right side of the image. However, on closer examination of the image, we see on the left side a preserved fetus, frozen in development, somewhere between 8-11 weeks.

Born Esther Parnell (Blackmon) in Kenly, North Carolina, she was born with a condition called icthyosis, characterized by dry, scaly skin and no hair, hence her designation as the Alligator Girl. She continued to perform in carnivals and sideshows until 1982. In the 70s she also appeared in two horror movies: The Sentinel (1977, an excellent film; the Dutchess and I watched it a few months ago. Esther played one of the demons emerging from the mouth of hell!) and The Mutations (1974)

Eva and Leana Munzer These two little Jewish girls have a very sad story. Their parents left them with a non-jewish family who took care of them. Then the husband and wife had a fight and the husband betrayed them to the SS, who captured the girls and sent them to Auschwitz, where they - like most small children - were gassed upon arrival. Their little brother, Alfred, however, survived.
