15 Incredible Cloud Formations

Wave cloud These clouds are usually formed by waves of air that flow over a raised land feature such as a mountain range.

Experts say the clouds were pristine examples of "Kelvin-Helmholtz waves." Whether seen in the sky or in the ocean, this type of turbulence always forms when a fast-moving layer of fluid slides on top of a slower, thicker layer, dragging its surface.

"Cloud Streets" - Meteorology News. "This image of cloud streets is a particularly poignant example of how well-defined the boundary can be between the rising motions (forming the clouds) and the sinking motion (clear air). This image shows cloud streets as viewed from a plane flying just above the unstable air and within the inversion layer."

According to the Sapporo Meteorological Observatory, these low-altitude stratocumulus clouds were rolled into long, distinctive ribbons after becoming trapped in air currents. And I thought they were row-cropping clouds in heaven!

Similar to what I saw last night. The crescent moon was sitting in the west with lightning flashing under it. Very pretty.

Moonlight: And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars—all the heavenly array—do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the Lord your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven.

Fire rainbows are the rarest of all naturally occurring atmospheric phenomena. For a fire rainbow to occur, cirrus clouds must be 20,000 feet in the air with the precise amount of ice crystals, and the sun must hit the clouds at 58 degrees.

These crazy clouds that look like a row of crashing waves are known as Kelvin-Helmholz waves. They form when two layers of air or liquid of different densities move past each other at different speeds, creating shearing at the boundary.
