She was ambitious to be a leader in NYC society, but was barred for years because the Vanderbilts were considered 'new money'. Her prestige was lifted when her daughter Consuelo married the Duke of Marlborough. She divorced her husband, which was scandalous for the times, and later married his friend Oliver Belmont. After Belmont's death, she devoted herself to the cause of female suffrage.
