Edison Denisov (1929-1996) was a Russian composer in the so-called "Underground"—"Anti-Collectivist", "alternative" or "nonconformist" division of Soviet music. He studied mathematics before composing. This decision was enthusiastically supported by Shostakovich, who tutored him in composition. In 1951–56 he studied composition, orchestration, analysis and piano at the Moscow Conservatory . In 1959 he composed the opera "Soldier Ivan" in 3 acts based on Russian folk fairy tales.
