Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen : Portrait of a Man with Gloves, 1533 - Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts

The style of this portrait is reminiscent of Paulus Moreelse. The sitter is in typical Dutch costume of around 1625: she wears a tight-fitting black overdress, often worn by unmarried women (married women wore a looser ‘vlieger’ gown with a gold or colourful stomacher called a ‘borst’, seen in Frans Halss 1625 portrait of Aletta Hanemans in the Mauritshuis). The sitter here also wears a millstone ruff and lace trimmed cap; her bodice sleeves are of black silk probably woven with gold.
