Nearly two thirds of the contiguous United States was experiencing some level of drought by the end of August 2012, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. 39 percent of the nation suffered from severe to extreme drought. Though the numbers changed a bit in mid-September, the drought parched much of the interior United States and left both domestic and wild animals scrounging for food.

In August satellites observed the effects of drought and heat waves on vegetation from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River.

The majority of Earth science research satellites developed or operated by NASA in the past few decades have been launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base. The newest satellite in the venerable Landsat program launched from this spot along the central California coast on February 11, 2013, following the path of its seven predecessors.

The new Landsat Data Continuity Mission satellite captured a glimpse of Vandenberg Air Force Base and the central California coast. Vandenberg has been the launch site for a majority of U. Earth science research missions.
