The picture shows the Great Western Hotel which was effectively the frontage of Snow Hill station, the entrance being the arch in the front, on the left and right hand sides Livery Street and Snow Hill both had entrances. The Great Western Hotel's demolition began on 23rd October 1969, the station itself closed 6th March 1972, for a long time it had been an unstaffed terminus for a commuter service to Wolverhampton Low Level. The picture was taken on a quiet Sunday morning, in the foreground…

How Broad Street used to look

Today Broad Street is the centre of nightlife in the city, but not so long ago it looked quite different.

Standing in the now pedestrianised Union Street in Central Birmingham is Metro-Cammell bodied Guy MOF 14 the bus has worked a Sunday service 52 from Beeches Estate via Walsall Road. The street has not changed that much, City Arcade (next to the bus) is still with us, cleaned and restored but with most of the shops empty and also Union passage is still present although all of the shops are vacant apart from W.H.Smith on the corner. Under the large modern building was the city centre…
