Josephine Baker began her career as part of a dance group in St. Louis before moving to New York to perform at Harlem’s Cotton Club. In 1925, she moved to Paris and was a huge success in the ”Folies Bergere”. In France, she did not feel the same level of racial prejudice that was prevalent in the United States at the time. In the 1950s, Baker took up the cause of racial equality in America, and stood in the crowds before the Lincoln Memorial at the end of the 1963 March on Washington.
