Cosmati pavement from Basilica San Marco in Venice, Italy. Bits of red and green porphyry and mottled marble cut into infinite variety on the square, glow in the evening light.

Throughout the late Medieval period the Cosmati family out of Rome created masterpieces in many of Italy's most important churches. No, not on the walls but with the floors, where you often walk! Westminster Abbey in London has a fine Cosmati floor from the 13th century!
