An amazing sky taken off the deck of a rental home in Hanmer, NZ. NASA wrote me and asked if they could use this photo as their Astronomy Picture of the Day. I naturally said YES!!!! Another shot from an incredible mammatus cloud display on June 26, 2011. The sky was literally exploding about 15 minutes after sunset. I've increased the contrast a touch on this shot to mimic what your eyes could actually see - this is exactly how it appeared when not looking through a digital sensor. I just stared straight up into this scene and actually cheered (don't worry, I made sure I was alone so that no one would call the looney bin and lock me up).
