Washed Up is an ongoing project by Mexican-born, New York-based artist Alejandro Duran that addresses the issue of plastic pollution making its way across the ocean and onto the shores of Sian Ka’an, Mexico’s largest federally-protected reserve. this site is home to a vast array of flora and fauna and the world’s 2nd largest coastal barrier reef. Unfortunately, Sian Ka’an is also a repository for the world’s trash, which is carried there by ocean currents from every corner of the globe (site). South Korea's breathtaking deep sea diver women For centuries, haenyeo women from the island province of Jeju have made their living diving for seafood on the ocean floor ... without ever using an air tank. They dive as deep as 10 metres for two minutes at a time, with lead weights strapped to their waists so they sink faster, and they leave a flotation device (or tewak) on the surface with a net hanging beneath it to store all the creatures they find People, Lady, South Korea, Gangnam Style, South, Korea, Jeju Island, Jeju

Self-taught photographer Andy W Langton doesn’t do parachute photography when he travels — he professes he has to stay anywhere long enough to experience and soak up the people, places and atmos before he lets the photos roll. His photo series, The Last of the Mermaids, which had him following two haenyeo (‘diving women‘) from South Korea’s Jeju Island, is especially fascinating. Surrealism, Scuba Diving, Diving, Scuba

The island of Jeju, 53 miles south of mainland Korea, lies at the watery crossroads of the Yellow and East China Seas. Diving for conch, octopus, urchin, and abalone had always taken place there but due to large taxes was never very profitable – something men would take up if there was no alternative. That was until a canny group of women in the 18th century realized that women did not, unlike their men folk, have to pay taxes. A loophole was about to become a living.
