Okapi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Africa. Although okapi are not Endangered, they are listed as Near Threatened. The biggest problems are habitat destruction and the upheavals of recent years in the Congo area. (I love this picture because I always thought the Okapi was small, obviously not.) Okapis (Okapia johnstoni), the only living relative of giraffes, are shy and reclusive creatures that dwell in the dense rain forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. There in light filtering through lush foliage, their striped rumps provide excellent camouflage. Due to habitat loss and political unrest in the DRC, the wild population has declined by 50 percent in the last 20 years. Animals Beautiful
