I love to expand my comfort zone in gentle ways, so when I want to make friends a color I don't often use (yellow for instance), I look for an image that inspires me and has this color as well as others that come more naturally to me. Working with this "borrowed" color palette allows me to practice and experiment in a way that feels fun and not too scary! This is one of the exercises we play with in my online class Soulful Abstracts, as we uncover our personal art language!

DAY 5: Texture and Collage! Collage is probably my favorite technique of all, so I've kept the best for last! I love the serendipity of this process and how quickly it allows you to build a piece and create an atmosphere. Mark-making is such a personal thing, a bit like your creative fingerprints! They convey the energy that you felt in a particular moment, giving it a visual form, and nobody will ever create the same combination of lines, shapes and movement as you. Even if you are a complete beginner, you already have a unique mark-making signature: explore it, practice it and build upon it! To me, this is one of the absolute best ways to develop your own style, especially with abstract art.

Nature is an endless source of inspiration... and painting tools!
