Originally Hikuma Castle under the rulership of the Imagawa, Hamamatsu-jo was transferred to the Tokugawa after the Battle of Okehazama. At that time, Imagawa power was weakened and their territories were split between the Takeda and Tokugawa in 1568. Ieyasu later moved to Sunpu in 1568 & proprietorship of the castle changed frequently thereafter.
