Has Rare Lion of Africa's Cape Eluded Extinction?

For 30 years, John Spence searched for descendants of the magnificent black-maned Cape lion, which was thought to be extinct in the Cape region of Africa since the 1850s. His search ended a year ago when he received pictures of a lion at a zoo in Siberia that resembled the former "King of the Cape."

The Armadillo Lizard is a lizard endemic to desert areas of southern Africa. The natural habitat of this lizard is scrub and rocky outcrops. It is diurnal. It hides in rock cracks and crevices. It lives in social groups of up to 30. The Armadillo Lizard possesses an uncommon antipredator adaptation, in which it takes its tail in its mouth and rolls into a ball when frightened.

Outside sources are credited (with links) whenever possible — on both unique posts & re-blogs. Any post can be removed upon request (please provide URL link to the post/page and the name of the animal if you contact me). Enjoy!

beetle closeup

scurfy

Found this 4mm long curculionid beetle (ID ?) in the miombo's of Katanga (DR Congo, Mikembo sanctuary, January 2014). It is attracted by camp lights. At first I thought it was dirty, but it has peculiar scales all over its body. Some of the scales have something of snowflakes with a touch of nacre. Each of them has a short central stalk firmly connected to the cuticula. Studio stack of a prepared specimen, based on 235 exposures (ISO100, f/9 , 1/160s, tracing paper diffused flash), assembled…

A zebra-frog.. sometimes I wish animals like this were real.

39 Amazing Photomanipulations

The most creative examples I could find of photo-editing wizardry. Lots of hybrid animals, soft materials that should be brittle and vice versa, body parts looking far too natural in the wrong places, and (for some odd reason) people removing their own heads. These are equal parts funny and disturbing.
