Hospitalized in Virginia for injuries received in battle, Brother McKinley was greatly impressed with the friendliness of a Union surgeon toward Confederate wounded. He discovered the men were Brother Masons, and marveling at the bonds which transgressed war, he made haste to join a Lodge. A Confederate Master Raised McKinley in Hiram Lodge No. 21, Winchester, Virginia, on May 3, 1865. He was given a demit, so he could take his membership back home to Ohio. (6) Robert Lincoln was also at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York on September 6, 1901 – at President William McKinley's invitation – when McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. Though nearby, Robert was not an eyewitness. After this third incident, Lincoln refused to attend any more presidental events, commenting “There is a certain fatality about presidential functions when I am present.” Leon, Robert Todd Lincoln, I Am Present, Appomattox Court House, Phillips Exeter Academy, William Mckinley, Harvard College, What Is Today, Harvard Law School
