Wildland firefighting

When fires spark in some of the most inaccessible swaths of the Canadian wilderness, elite firefighters known as smokejumpers are called into action. Rather than rolling up to the scene in a fire truck, they leap out of planes and descend by parachute to fight fires before they grow out of control.

What to expect. Wildland firefighting is inherently dangerous work. However, the rewards outweigh the risk in my experience. Here’s answers to the most commonly asked questions I get as a mentor for you to get an idea of my day-to-day life as a wildland firefighter and what you’re getting yourself into.

These men and women are unsung hero's! They go out and put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe! While pants, shirts and other gear are distributed by the agency, firefighters' boots are their own, spokespeople said, and are subsidized with a government stipend.
