PREDESTINATION (2014) You know who she is and you understand who you are and now maybe youre ready to understand who I am. One does not understand this movie easily. The Spierig Brothers tell a confounding story of time travel starting from a simple bet in a bar that slowly becomes into a chase through time. Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook make a fine duo in their gender-bending performances bringing both grit and empathy to their acts. The camerawork and music is fine; not stellar but it gets the job done. I do regret how a major part of the story is told through voice over instead of visual storytelling. This review might be a bit short since this is not a movie I can talk about in length without giving the story away. But boy is this one of the most unique and puzzling stories Ive ever seen heard or read before. The movie starts off innocently enough; just a bartender and a writer bantering over the bar. But soon when the writer launches into a biography of his life the movie becomes much more intriguing and interesting. After the story is told the movie launches into what I can only call as controlled madness. While other movies might have one plot twist near the end of the movie Predestination bombards you with twist after twist making each minute more interesting than the one before it. By the end even after youve pieced everything together itll still be hard to understand-and to forget. Predestination is a great example of how a simple yet mind-bending idea can be much more engaging once put into film. As a high-school kid I would talk about this non-stop because I thought the movie was so cool and thought-provoking. But even now Predestination still takes time for me to wrap my head around - and that what makes it so great.
