The Pilgrims, the original refugees, were the English settlers who came to North America on the Mayflower in search of freedom from religious persecution in England and established the Plymouth Colony in what is today Plymouth, Massachusetts, named after the final departure port of Plymouth, Devon

Almost 400 years ago - September 6, 1620 - the Mayflower set sail, and this time there was no turning back. The 180-tonne vessel carried its 102 passengers and crew to America.
