Picea pungens 'Koster' (Colorado Spruce) is a medium-sized, evergreen conifer of elegant conical habit with prickly, brilliant silvery-blue foliage. Irregularly shaped in youth, it turns into a very attractive blue tree, lighting up the garden throughout the year. The needles display a metallic blue cast, particularly on the tips of the new growth, and mature to silver through the summer. Slow growing (12-15 in. per year or 30-37 cm), this striking Colorado Spruce stands out in the landscape. A perfect silver-blue pyramidal tree that grows to 6 ft. tall. This could be the perfect 'Live Christmas Tree'. In 10 years the tree will be 6 ft tall x 3 ft wide, but will continue growing up to 12 ft tall. Very hardy to -40 deg F, zone 3. Prefers full sun in well-drained soil. Commonly called the Continental Colorado Spruce.

Regarding Picea pungens we have four different cultivars in our garden which are all very similar and these are 'Hoopsii', 'Thompson', 'Hoto' and 'Kosteri'. The cultivar in this photos is Picea pungens 'Thompson'. 'Four Seasons' is an English garden for all seasons. 2010 winner "Overall Gardener of the Year" Garden New national garden competition. 2007 winner Daily Mail National Garden Competition. www.fourseasonsgarden.co.uk
