CROUCHING for five months beside a river in Surrey, pestered by insects and buffeted by winds, John Everett Millais went to great extremes when he painted Ophelia, one of the most famous pictures in British art.

The inflexible conventions of classical art, combined with the social unrest that was arising as a result of large-scale industrialization set the scene in the mid-19th century for a rebellious group of young artists to express their discontent through an art movement they formed called the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. #preraphaelite #preraphaelitebrotherhood #preraphaelites #arthistory #artincontext
