Jesus cleanses the temple

This site could not be more holy to Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Bahai faithful. Some day it is the very first rock in the world's creation AND where Almighty God first breathed life into Adam. Muslims and Bahai believe it's where Muhammed received his inspiration. Jews and Christians say the Ark of the Covenant rested here. Only a few feet away, St. Peter offered Christianity's first altar call and 3,000 converts had church for the first time on the Day of Pentecost, 33 A.D.

Jesus is depicted in the Bible as manly, courageous, intelligent, humble, and never one to water down the truth. Here he throws the money changers out of his Father's temple with a whip.

A student asked why Jesus gets angry at the temple. Other people probably have similar questions, so I thought I’d share my response here.

On Holy Monday, Jesus cleansed the temple in Jerusalem. The temple was one of the first places Jesus visited during holy week. When He got to the temple, He found it filled with corrupt money changers and merchants who had turned the temple into a place of business. Christ cast out the merchants and declared, “My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves” (Luke 19:46). The Jews had become familiar with the offering of blood, and had almost lost sight of the fact that it was sin which made necessary all this shedding of the blood of beasts. They did not discern that it prefigured the blood of God's dear Son.

"When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables." (John 2:13-15 NIV) What does this mean for us today? Why did Jesus drive them out?
