two paintings depicting the same person's head in different colors and shapes, each with their own name on it

Middle School artists began the year by looking at the art Guiseppe Arcimboldo, a Renaissance painter who created portraits made up of other objects (such as fruit, vegetables and birds). The students took this concept and made it their own by filling their own silhouette with images of things that tell something about themselves. Students used pencil, ink and watercolors to complete their works.

a drawing of an eye with the reflection of a house in it's iris

Our complex color wheels are done! So are our color theory musical symbols with "vibration" lines. After two weeks of painting we need to do something else. It should be time for clay, or tin tooling or something! But, even thought I gave her my supply order 7 weeks ago, the secretary STILL has not sent it to the school district warehouse, the only place I can get art supplies with school money. So these projects feature a lot of drawing, pencil, marker and pen. We are out of oil pastel…

art projects

After nearly a decade of teaching secondary students, I've had a lot of time to test out a variety of 2d art projects. Let's face it: as teachers, sometimes we plan and plan and plan. We are so excited to deliver the project, and then... it flops. Students are uninterested and the final products aren't

My 8th graders art talents vary from amazing to down right pitiful. As a middle school art teacher, I do not grade on talent, I grade on the ability to follow directions, neatness, work habits and my expectations of their individual work. I make sure that they learn the concepts and techniques, but their execution of the skills might not always be as wonderful as I would like them to be. I am one of the few full time elective teachers at my school, and that means that not all of the students…

a drawing of a man with white hair and green eyes

MANGA, MANGA, MANGA... it seems that is all I see in my classroom anymore. I love that my students are interested in a particular type of art, but I do sometimes get tired of seeing the same style over, and over, and over, and over.... HOWEVER, I decided to embrace their interests and use that to my advantage. I found a website www.faceyourmanga.com and did a little playing around. This site allows you to go on and create your own Mangatar... for FREE! There are, of course, options to pay…

Inspired by pinterest... I took photos of the children a few days before starting the lesson. Use a white background when taking the profile photo. Use photo shop to create the silhouette or other photo editing software. I had the silhouettes printed on large 11x17 paper at my office. The day we started the lesson we talked about the elements of art, line, shape, form, value, space and some principles such as pattern and rhythm with the use of a power point. To finish the class, I had…

a group of pictures on a wall with some words written in different colors and shapes

I took photographs of the students and used a computer drawing program to convert them to high contrast image. The portrait image was transferred (photo copied) to a clear overhead transparency. The students created a collage on white base paper under the overhead picture. To complete the project the artists added a personal phrase about themselves and mounted the portraits on a 12x18 sheet of heavy construction paper. The student portraits were placed around the multi purpose room for the…
