Shakespeare’s original Globe theatre (known as ‘The Globe’) first opened in London in the year 1599. The open-air theatre staged some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays over the next 14 years. However in 1613, during a performance of Henry VIII, the entire theatre burnt down after a prop malfunctioned and set the thatched roof on fire.
