In 1949 Milligan joined a 9 piece band behind Miles Davis. This nonet was not well received by the general public, but Davis kept reforming the group over the next several years, eventually recording 12 singles, (3 arranged by Mulligan,) which formed the basis of Birth of the Cool recorded in 1957.  The Davis nonet proved to be one of the most influential groups in Jazz history giving rise to the sound known as West Coast Jazz.
