the mittens are made of superwash wool and did not shrink when the mittens were felt

My LYS had a book about felting on display. The book had a section on children's mittens. It recommended casting on in cotton, knitting a few rounds, switching to wool, making the mittens, felting the mittens, removing the waste cotton and then knitting the cuff into the holes where the cotton had been. Hmmm. Well...it would work, yes. You COULD do it that way. But...why? What a lot of work. Try this instead: click pictureDoes it work? You bet. Did it hold up? See for yourself. Here are the…

(Click on photos to enlarge) slisen.blogspot.com I’ve been machine knitting for many years but I've never made a pair of felted mittens. I’ve been wondering what I could make with some worsted wool that I’ve had on hand for awhile, so guess it’s about time for some felted mittens. They’re based on my favorite mitten pattern with size adjusted to compensate for the felting. They feature a thumb gusset for better fit and a shortrowed fingertip. One 4 oz skein will make the size in this…

several mittens and gloves hanging from strings on a table

I said I'd be done on with my Crafty Christmas Tree by the 15th, so it's getting down to the wire! If you remember my felted garland turned out to be too short. After I lengthened it I ended up having some extra wool... which I definitely didn't want it to go to waste. So I used it and a cookie cutter I already had to make these cute little mitten ornaments. I started with the mitten shaped cookie cutter, my needle felting needles, and mat. Stuffed the cookie cutter full of wool. Then needle…

three knitted mittens hanging on a clothesline with grass and trees in the background

These Heritage Star mittens are the next free pattern in our Christmas KAL! They are quick and cozy, a perfect gift. The origin of these mittens is a little curious! A while back, a lady posted a mysterious picture of a pair of mittens, rustic and covered in traces of snow, and begged for anyone to be able to replicate them. Like many searches for patterns from random internet pictures, I was never able to find the pattern, so we made our own. The popularity of them took off and it seemed…

a person's hand on top of a piece of paper with scissors next to it

I have never tried to make mittens before, so here goes a detailed tutorial of how I did it! First, I measured my hand, then made a pattern that is about 50% wider and longer than the finished mitten should be. I also made a larger thumb. I transferred these to two sets of resist material. I use an inexpensive foam carpet underpad material (from a big roll that I picked up at Home Depot). Note the thumbs are taped into place, making one right handed and the other left. Then I laid these two…
