A new image of Eta Carinae and its Homunculus Nebula using recent observations acquired in early and mid 2018. I'll do my best to explain what's going on here, though my description may be inadequate. Take special note of the blue parts of the nebula. Now imagine you are Nathan Smith, an astronomer who has been studying the Carina nebula and Eta Carinae in particular for years, now. His March 2018 observations used a filter designed to only allow light from a certain magnesium emission line…

Known for its unpredictable behavior, Eta Carinae has erupted twice in the 19th century for unknown reasons. Eta Carinae is located in the southern constellation of Carina and is made up of two massive stars. The brighter, cooler, primary star has about 90 times the mass of the sun and the smaller, hotter, companion star has approximately 30 solar masses. #Nebula #Nebulosa #Star #Astronomy #Wallpaper #SpaceTelescope 📷: NASA, ESA, N. by The Cosmic Companion Aug 16 ·2019 -The supermassive star Eta Carinae is destined to explode as a massive supernova. Before its demise, it is kicking off material, much like SN2016iet did previous to its eruption. The “bells” recorded in this image from the Hubble Space Telescope, were first seen in 1840, and may be the result of a collision with another star. This body sits 7,500 light years from Earth.
