What does a broken heart and contrite spirit mean? It means that your heart is broken and you do not seek your own will. You seek the Lord's will to bless and help others (full submission). If your spirit is contrite, you are in a constant state of repentance, meaning that your heart is turned to God always (full repentance). If these two attributes of godliness are within you, you shall be redeemed from the fall, be given the baptism of fire and gift of the Holy Ghost.

It is a heart that embraces the need for God's mercy and truly desires a more holy life. So what does a broken and contrite heart look like?

Broken Hearts, Crushed Spirits The psalmist David wrote: “Jehovah is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.” (Psalm 34:18) Commenting on this verse, Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible notes: “It is the character of the righteous . . . that they are of a broken heart and a contrite spirit, that is, humbled for sin, and emptied of self; they are low in their own eyes, and have no confidence in their own merit.”
