Custard powder. These are two words not typically on the tip of the average American foodie's tongue. That's understandable, because, unless an American cook has some form of culinary ties to the United Kingdom or Australia (via cookbooks, travel or personal friendship), it's not an ingredient that has made its way into our food lover's vocabulary. Given its popularity "across the pond", I find that hard to understand, because, for me it's a "nifty", time-saving pantry staple. I learned…

What was the first thing you ever did in the kitchen? I’d like to say my first tentative steps into cooking were scrambling eggs or stirring a risotto, but it was far less auspicious. The pre…

I always buy a container of Bird's Eye Custard Powder to make Nanaimo Bars (recipe HERE) and then have a tin of it sitting in my cupboard until I decide to make more Nanaimo Bars. Ever had a Nanaimo Bar? You really should. Homemade, not store bought. Just do it. Anyway.... I went on the lookout for other recipes using Bird's Eye Custard Powder that didn't have "Nanaimo Bar" in the title somewhere. I found these lovely cookie sandwiches over at Christina's Cucina (Visit HERE) and knew I had…

a stack of pancakes sitting on top of a plate

Off late I have gone crazy over custard powder, yes you heard me right. I had picked up a tin of Bird's Custard powder and ever since I have been exploring all possible recipes with it so far I had tried the fruit custard, 5 minutes custard cake and the custard pancakes which I am totally spellbound with and thought of sharing it here. Most of you must be knowing this by now especially vegans. Custard powder acts as a perfect replacement for eggs. 1 egg = 1 tbsp of milk +2 tbsp of custard…

A person can only eat so many Nanaimo bars…Sent by KatieEditor: Katie, yes, you can just mix it up and eat it like regular instant pudding, if you are so inclined. But maybe our readers have other recipe suggestions?

Easiest and yummiest custard slice you'll ever make! One of my friends is addicted to it and I have to bring it to every Girl's Night we have or else! My dad says it's the best he's ever tasted. You can try adding cocoa powder to make a choc custard. I haven't tried that yet.

I never really appreciated custard powder until I moved to Switzerland. If you are, like me, over a certain age, you'll all remember that tin of Bird's custard powder from your childhood. It was usually right at the back of the cupboard, next to the tin of black treacle and those packets of Rowntree jelly.…
