two blue spools are sitting in a white container

Today I'll provide the back story on the three pieces dyed by pole-wrapping--the tesuji, arashi, and bomaki fabrics--that appeared in this week's WIP Wednesday entry. I didn't take step-by-step photos, so you'll have to go elsewhere for more extensive descriptions of the process. Lucia Lapone has written a good how-to on tesuji, although it's in Italian: "Tecniche: Tesuji Shibori." Dharma Trading Company has instructions for arashi dyeing a necktie and a T-shirt. ArtThreads also offers a…

Arashi -嵐 (Storm) Hi, everyone! Cindy Lohbeck here! Excited to be sharing one of my favorite processes! Arashi Shibori, or pole wrapped shibori, is a Japanese fabric dyeing method that leaves you with beautiful organic images like water, trees and lightning. Arashi literally translates to “Storm”. I teach a class called “Pole Dancing” and had quite a stash of indigo patterns I wanted to make a quilt out of. Lovely by themselves, but I wanted to play off of the water imagery, and knew just…

an artistic piece of art that looks like it has been dyed with blue and green colors

Shibori is an ancient Japanese resist dyeing technique. We have already skimmed the surface of how Itajime Shibori is made. Today we will aim to do the same with Nui Shibori. ------ With Nui Shibori, one stitches the sections where they don't want dye to penetrate. This is the one technique where the artist has comparatively more control over the final out come. Using this technique, one can achieve forms and definite lines on the fabric. ------ To begin with, it is always good to have a…

Itajime is one of the most popular shibori (tie-dye) techniques. It literally means “wood clamping,” as dyers often use cutouts of wood or plastic board. In this video, we show simple shibori hacks using the lid of a plastic salad container to create itajime patterns like a pro. Use any flat plastic material and Yamato Indigo Starter Kit. Learn basics and explore unique shapes and ways of folding to create your own original patterns. Add Itajime to your summer home projects!

blue and white tie - dyed fabric with many small flowers on it's surface

Kumo shibori takes a bit of time to do (and strong fingers!) but it looks spectacular. It's often described as being spider webs - I think it also looks like jellyfish or galaxies. There is a tool that is used in Japan for this tie that has a spike you hook the fabric over. I don't have that tool and have actually never seen one for sale in this country! However, it's not hard to get the same results without it. I use artificial sinew for most shibori ties - see the materials section of this…
