#2028. Angel of Mercy, February, 2020. Historically it has been a man's world. In 1861 after seeing young soldiers fighting in the American Civil War die needlessly due solely to lack of timely medical care, Clara Barton rallied other women and fought to have women working in the field army hospitals. Barton retired to Switzerland, where a new international organization had formed to provide humanitarian relief. Barton returned to the USA and with the to establish the American Red Cross.
