Witches are thought to be the messengers of the devil from hell, and they throughout the play, the witches are the reason for Macbeth's fate. Banquo and Macbeth are introduced to the idea that Macbeth will be thane of Cawdor. This is said by the witches and it comes true. Banquo and Macbeth don't know what to think, because everything that the witches have said comes true.
