Collaborative art Garden inspired - this would be really awesome with paint stirrers, give each child a stirrer and a couple of colors - identify the background color, and attach them once completed. Students pick a color and have to make the stick fade from dark to light using value. They then get to pick their own design to paint over the value chart. Whole school collaborative...maybe we could use....Paint Stirrer Sticks! After installation, these would make great bookmarks.

Peacocks, and Aboriginal Art, and Cool Names!

Ever since I shot this wedding, http://www.shelbyjunephotography.com/2010/06/wedding-photography.html, I have been fascinated with peacocks! They are now my favorite bird! They really are magnificent! I decided to do a week of peacock paintings with kinder through fifth grade. The kinder kids did a draw-a-long where we used a black marker to draw it, then they painted with tempera cakes and watercolors, following a color sequence. If you would like the step by step lesson plan with photos…

Sumi-e Ink Paintings

Sumi-e ink painting is always a great value study. Diluting ink to get 5-7 shades of value looks harder then it really is! 7th graders were asked to create a wet-in-wet background with watercolor and then paint either bamboo stalks or a tree form over the background. At least 5 different values of ink had to be shown. We practiced traditional Sumi-e methods before we worked on our final projects as well as creating value scales from ink. 3D tissue paper "blossoms" were added for color and…

Using Color Cells - In the style of Chuck Close

I was thinking about creating some good projects to teach VALUE....Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. For most paintings it is usually the one element that can make or break a composition....shadows and highlights are on this value scale. If you have a painting that just isn't working you might want to test for value...you can do this by making a Value finder as I describe here or taking a black and white photo of your painting to show your values. In the art world Chuck Close is…
