Despite its medieval appearance Banbury Cross was constructed in 1859 to celebrate the wedding of Queen Victoria's daughter to the King of Prussia. The gothic cross is in the style of the Eleanor Crosses. At one point Banbury had three medieval crosses, but they were destroyed by Puritans in 1600.
